reinforce-concreteWhen carrying out the construction of carbon reduction projects, consideration should be given to the CO2 emissions associated with the embedded works.  Typical values for reinforced structural concrete are 0.372 tonnes CO2 equivalent for each cubic metre cast, which allows for 0.1 tonnes of steel reinforcing.  Similarly, the typical value for each tonne of structural steel produced in the UK is 1.93 tonnes CO2 equivalent.

Carbon Consulting and Crediting Ltd. (CO2CC) has an extensive database containing information on the carbon footprint of construction activities.   Consideration can be given to both the embodied and direct carbon emissions.  Embodied relates to the CO2 emissions during the production of something such as steel reinforcing and direct is that which is produced physically during a process or activity such as rock excavation.
